ANTS 2008 - Call for Papers

چکیده
Swarm intelligence is a relatively new discipline that deals with the study of self-organizing processes both in nature and in artificial systems. Researchers in ethology and animal behavior have proposed many models to explain interesting aspects of social insect behavior such as self-organization and shape-formation. Recently, algorithms inspired by these models have been proposed to solve difficult computational problems. An example of a particularly successful research direction in swarm intelligence is ant colony optimization, the main focus of which is on discrete optimization problems. Ant colony optimization has been applied successfully to a large number of difficult discrete optimization problems including the traveling salesman problem, the quadratic assignment problem, scheduling, vehicle routing, etc., as well as to routing in telecommunication networks. Another interesting approach is that of particle swarm optimization, that focuses on continuous optimization problems. Here too, a number of successful applications can be found in the recent literature. Swarm robotics is another relevant field. Here, the focus is on applying swarm intelligence techniques to the control of large groups of cooperating autonomous robots. ANTS 2008 will give researchers in swarm intelligence the opportunity to meet, to present their latest research, and to discuss current developments and applications. The three-day conference will be held in Brussels, Belgium, on September 22–24, 2008. Tutorial sessions will be held in the mornings before the conference program.

The Fourth International Symposium on Advanced Networks and Telecommunication Systems (ANTS) (http://www.ieee-comsoc-ants.org/2010/) was held in Mumbai, India, during December 16–18, 2010, at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay (Mumbai). The theme of ANTS-2010 continued to focus on communication systems and networking technologies for realizing converged ubiquitous broadband connect...
متن کاملReproductive constraint is a developmental mechanism that maintains social harmony in advanced ant societies.
A hallmark of eusociality in ants is the reproductive division of labor between queens and workers. Yet, nothing is known about the molecular mechanisms underlying reproduction in this group. We therefore compared the developmental genetic capacity of queens and workers to reproduce in several eusocially advanced species from the two largest subfamilies of ants, the Myrmicinae and Formicinae. I...
متن کاملSynanthropic Ants as Vectors of Pathogens in Hospitals of Iran
Background: Synanthropic ants can transmit pathogens especially in hospital environments, but this fact had not been confirmed in Palaearctic region. This is the first study on confirming this ability of ants in this region. Methods: Three hospitals of Bandar Abbas, Iran have been selected for monthly sampling of ants in their various wards. The main processe...
متن کاملInterspecific Communication: Treehopper Alarms Make Ants Come Running
Stable mutualisms are ubiquitous in nature and this presents a puzzle for evolutionary biology. A new study of interactions between treehoppers and ants shows that honest communication coordinates anti-predator behaviour to improve the efficiency of the service ants provide.
متن کاملArmy Ants as Research and Collection Tools
Ants that fall prey to the raids of army ants commonly respond by evacuating their nests. This documented behavior has been underexploited by researchers as an efficient research tool. This study focuses on the evacuation response of the southwestern desert ant Aphaenogaster cockerelli André (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) to the army ant Newamyrmex nigrescens Cresson. It is shown that army ants can ...
